The October Thumbs Up Goes To….

thumbs upWe’ve tallied all the Thumbs Up’s and Thumbs Down’s for the month of October and the Froglix listeners have proven to have quite the diversity of tastes. Represented in the Top Ten alone though are artists we have described before as rock, modern rock, alternative rock, Brit alt-rock, ambient, electro, electronica, indie pop, ska, power ska, reggae, punk, post-punk, singer/songwriter, and actually quite a bit more. So without further ado…take a listen to October’s favorites…

More than Treading…

Froglix has recently received word that the Treading Lemmings, fresh off their righteous gig at Philadelphia’s Hard Rock Cafe (photo above), are putting the finishing touches on some new material.  Front man Christopher Quinn tells us that they are on track to have at least (4) new songs completed by summer’s end and we, of course, are rather looking forward to taking a listen.  No doubt they’ll be solid as we’ve come to expect nothing less from them.  (No pressure gentlemen).

This Just In: Treading Lemmings Return to the Studio

DC’s Treading Lemmings are off to a fine start here in 2011. Winners of (2) Froglix Music Awards and nominated for (4) Washington Area Music Awards, Quinn and the crew are riding the wave of good fortune right back into the studio to begin work on their next project.  It’s a rather fluid situation at the moment but near as we can tell work has already begun on an EP entitled Flotsam that Lemmings expect to be the precursor to their next full album release.  No drop date yet but when we know, you’ll know.  Perhaps the Lemmings will favour us yet again with a sneak peak at new track…or two!

And the Froggy Goes to…

As 2010 comes to a close, naturally, we tend to reflect on the year that was…and what a year it’s been here at Froglix!  We’ve made a number of technical upgrades and changes, incorporated more video content into our postings and last (but certainly not least) we’ve welcomed our good friend Thurdeen to the Froglix fold as our newest writer.  Further, and most importantly, we have been introduced to a bevy of talented musicians from around the world all striving for the same goal…to have their voices and their music heard by a global audience.  We consider it an honour to have been able to play even a small part in making that happen.  It has truly been a tremendous year in indie music and we are looking forward to what we are sure will be an incredible 2011 with great anticipation.  However, before we jump ahead, we would be remiss if we were not to take one more look back at the year that was and offer up our own “best of.”

Ladies and gentlemen, it is a distinct honour, nay a privilege, to present the First Annual Froglix Music Awards!  Winners of this year’s “Froggy” awards have been selected by the listeners and readers with input for DMitch, Thurdeen and myself, of course.  With a year filled with so much excellent music it was indeed difficult to narrow it down…but with no more gilding the lily or anymore adieu I give the winners!

New Release :: Cliff Notes by Treading Lemmings

artist: Treading Lemmings | genre: alternative, rock, brit-pop | label: unsigned | album: Cliff Notes [itunes link=”http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/all-at-sea/id395957999?uo=4″ title=”Get it at iTunes!”]

Here’s what I know…Quinn (vox), Joe Szadkowski (drums), Marc Roulier (bass), Andrew “Andj” Stainer (guitar) and Ricky Hunt (guitar), collectively known as Treading Lemmings, are passionate about their music.  They believe in it and, after listening to their most recent full-length studio offering entitled Cliff Notes…so do I.  Nearly a year and half ago, the Lemmings set out to write, record and produce a solid pop/alt-rock album.  They have succeeded.  But…let’s back up just a tad shall we?
The Froglix Faithful were first introduced to the Lemmings shortly after our initial launch back in the summer of 2009.  It was then, on one fateful Friday evening in July, I made the trek “into town” to check them out live.  About halfway through the show, Quinn hands me two (2) things.  A Treading Lemmings t-shirt (still got it…still where it) AND a 4-song EP.  I stayed for another set before jumping back in the car for the long journey back to my humble abode (aka Froglix World Headquarters) in Wild Wonderful West Virginia.  The first thing I did, after strapping on the seatbelt of course, was pop the disc into the player and commenced with the listening.  I was impressed.  My initial review touted their music as having a “sound that is creative, energetic and, best of all, pleasantly dissimilar to the mindless droves trying to become the next big emo-punk band” and I still believe that…even more so now having heard their latest album in it’s entirety.
Having followed this band for sometime, I’m impressed with how their sound has matured over the years and can very confidently say that Cliff Notes is their best work yet.  Quinn’s solid vocal performance surrounds creative lyrics immersed in melodic guitars and  strong bass lines anchored by a definitive alt-rock cadence.  As for my favourite tracks, aside from those currently in rotation, the lively pace of “A Roar From Boring Alice” really jumps out to me right away as does the moodiness/melancholy of Trial of the Century” and “How Green Was My Envy?” Regarding the latter, any song with a well placed eBow guitar sound is hard not too like!
Wanna rock Lemmings style?  Get the Cliff Notes and study up!

Back In the Mix

Treading LemmingsDC’s The Treading Lemmings are back in the studio working on tracks for their upcoming full length disc due out this summer. According to Lemmings’ front man Quinn, the album Cliff Notes (working title), once released, will not disappoint and, more to the point, will make quite a favourable impression on many a discerning ear.  Having heard the Lemmings live, in the studio and on many recordings I would tend to agree with him.  Interestingly enough, the Lemmings have also started to catalogue their studio experience via a blog on their MySpace page so be sure to check it out at www.myspace.com/treadinglemmings.
Not to be out done, our friends from Canada, the grunge master generals themselves, 22nd Century are working on a follow up to their first EP Apartment 22nd Century Live!509 as well.  In addition to the new the full-length release, they are also planning a spring tour that should include a CD release show in the Big Apple sometime in mid-may.

Dig it…The Best of OuterSound

The Best of Outersound - 2009
We round out 2009 with the Best of OuterSound.  It is a compilation of some (but not all) of the best indie music that has been delivered to the Froglix Faithful via our monthly OuterSound podcast and/or our global broadcast on Froglix Radio.  This first year-end edition could easily have been 2-3 times as long as it was very difficult to pick the songs for this episode.  We have, however settled on a final “Best of” list and it is, in order of appearance:
Rude City Riot (Vancouver, Canada), The Kut (UK), IM Munroe (Toronto, Canada), Treading Lemmings (Washington, DC), Lux Leopard (Sochi, Russia),  Everything Zen (Cleveland, OH), Mars Accelerator (Seattle, WA), Glue Factory (Long Beach, CA), Part One Tribe (Long Beach, CA), Cellarscape (UK), Artsy Pop (Paris, France), Black Knight (Australia), Nadine Loren (Los Angeles, CA) and Sharif (Los Angeles, CA).
