The Shortbus Sets Sail

Alas, it’s with a heavy heart that Froglix bids adieu to California’s Long Beach Shortbus.  We were first introduced to this phenomenal band shortly after we launched by the founder of Long Beach Records, Mudd Lowther.  Mudd was kind enough to send a box full of great music from the Shortbus and other great LBR artists to include Falling Idols, Glue Factory, 3rd Alley and others, many of which are still active in the rotation.  Before playing their last show in 2007, the Shortbus (comprised of members from Sublime and the Long Beach Dub All-Stars) released (2) discs including a self-titled release in ’02 and Flying Ship of Fantasy in ’04.  The latter of which contributed several excellent tracks for our global broadcast.  While the now defunct Shortbus won’t be heard via our global broadcast moving forward, be sure to look for them in our Archive Broadcast and mp3 archives page…both are coming soon.  We wish the members of Shortbus all the best and (fingers crossed) should they ever choose re-form, we would be honoured to once again include them as part of Froglix Radio.

3rd Alley alternative California hardcore Leek & the Bouncing Uptones Long Beach Long Beach Records Pretoria punk reggae reviews rock ska Souldier of Fortune South Africa

Everyone Likes a Party!

Our new friends at Longbeach Records released a phenomenal compilation disc Longbeach Records - Big Party 2last year entitled Incredible, Unstoppable Titan of Terror! Big Party 2 that is chock-full of standout performances from bands based here in the US and abroad.  In the “abroad” category we’d be remiss if we did not highlight Leek & the Bouncing Uptones from Pretoria, South Africa as their vibrantLeek and the Bouncing Uptones brand of Ska-core packs more than just a bit of a wallop. You will want to crank up the decibels because these blokes flat out bring it.   The crisp guitars deliver just the right amount of distortion.  The bass is fat.  The horns are perfectly placed. The drums are silly good and the vocals are right on point.  All in all, they deliver a Ska-core sound that is tru dat, showcasing elements of both genres all the while striking the perfect balance that keeps listeners engaged and engrossed.

Souldier of Fortune‘s “Payasso”  is a groovy track featured on the compilation and now is part of Froglix Radio’s Global Broadcast. 3rd Alley dives in as well with “Zim 2007” and “Oh My Janitor” also off of Big Party 2.

New Music from Two of LBR's Finest…Glue Factory & Part One Tribe

Glue FactoryWe recently received a package from Longbeach Records, the contents of which made our eyes and, eventually, our ears pop out! As we opened the box we found, tucked away inside, a number of new discs for our review from some of the best Third Wave and Punk bands on the planet. We’re still going through it all, but here’s a sampling of what we’ve dug into so far…

84 Day Syndrome, the newest release from Long Beach, CA’s Glue Factory, comes fully equipped with (10) tracks of pure adrenalin that hit harder than a Tyson uppercut. Keep your guard up as GF”s blend of hardcore, punk and rock comes at you fast and furious in a cascading barrage of sound full of ferocity and velocity. This disc flat out rocks.

Obvious As EverFlorida’s Part One Tribe, also on the LBR label, beautifully incorporates their reggae, rock & blues stylings in Obvious As Ever, the band’s most recent full-length CD. After 10 albums (6 studio recordings and 4 live albums) and literally over 1000 performances across the United States, they give true meaning to the words “hardest working band in the business”. You’d think that after a while the bump and grind of the road would take it’s toll…not so for these cats. The tracks on this disc are fresh, original, and full of a soulful vibe that can only be delivered by the Tribe.
