artist: Out Like Pluto | album: Take Cover | genre: pop-punk, alt-rock | label: The James Polk Shuffle Music

Out Like PlutoThe very first line from the bio on their own web sites goes, “Out Like Pluto is not here to revolutionize music, but they do want to make you dance.” And to that I say, “Thank you!” We all know fun music when we hear it. We want to sing along to our music. We want to tap our feet. We DO NOT want to have to think about it to appreciate it. With a couple years of writing music reviews under my belt, I’ve decided that whenever somebody describes their music as “experimental” what they mean to say is, “Here is some crap for you to waste five minutes of your life listening to.” No thank you! Out Like Pluto is NOT experimental. As they self-describe themselves, they deliver on the tried-and-true. It’s foot-tapping, catchy, but super strong alt-rock. From watching some clips on YouTube of them performing live, you can tell they are just having fun, and it’s contagious. And there is nothing wrong with music just being fun. In fact, it’s what makes me like these guys so much.

The latest album Take Cover came out last January from this Seattle five-piece. First formed by Andy (drums) and Kari (vox), the Out Like Pluto lineup is flushed out with Mike and Ben (guitar) and Jeremy (bass). The first single off the album, “Bridge”, is featured in the video above. My other favorites include “Placebo (Turn Me On)” and “Starring John Stamos”. “Papercut” also stands out as it showcases a softer side of Kari’s voice accompanied by strings, and in the process shows just how strong her singing really is. Every track on the album will make you feel good though. So, yeah, it’s nothing earth-shattering, and it’s very nostalgic of alt-rock from the 90′s…. but we all love the alt-rock from the 90′s, and besides, feeling good is exactly what I want in 2012.

Like it? Get it on

San Antonio’s Ledaswan is back in the mix with a new video for yet another diggable track from their EP NUM83R5.   ‘What a Way Two Drown’ is a sultry, melodic malay that showcases luscious layers of sound.  The dynamics of this song are stellar as are Erica’s vocals.  Just as she, they are simply lovely.

Froglix was very much impressed with this track when we first wrote about it a few months back but seeing it set to video truly gives it a life all it’s own.  DMitch, Thurdeen and myself plan on heading down to the Lone Star State for SxSW next year and very much hope to be able to catch these cats live.

listen now:
Faulkner :: 25 Years :: What a Way Two Drown

We first introduced San Antonio indie-rockers Ledaswan to the Froglix Faithful via a recent video post for “Faulkner,” a de-lovely track from their latest self-released EP NUM83R5 (aka Numbers) with a promise that a full-fledged review would be forthcoming.  I am a man of my word…so here it goes.

A recent review on another network, as they say, refer to Ledaswan as having a “pop” sound.  Pop? Really?  If theses cats are pop than Brittany Spears is R&B. I’m not buying it.  This just in, melodic does not always have to equal pop.  Rant over…moving on.

Mazzy Star?  Nope.  The Cranberries? Definitely not. Erica Monzon (lead vox, guitars, keys), brothers Jaime and David Monzon (electric guitars, keys), Lalo Rodriguez (bass guitar) and Oscar Linares (drums) deserve a little more credit than being compared to the “standard” female fronted, alternative/indie rock bands. How about Gwen Stefani meets the Jesus and Mary Chain?  That’s a bit more like it. Was I smitten by Erica’s charming, diaphanous voice? Of course, I’m only human and…she’s really good!  Mind you, she’s not as gritty as Alison Mosshart from The Dead Weather nor as powerful as, dare I say it, Ann Wilson from Heart. But that’s a good thing as neither of those styles would work for this band.  Her voice (and stage presence for that matter) actually remind me somewhat of Sarah Shannon from Velocity Girl. Remember them?  Meanwhile, the colourful guitar work turned in by the brothers Monzon really stands out on this album but I especially like what they did with “What a Way to Drown.” Lalo’s active bass style on “25 Years” is quite impressive as it creates intresting textures while simultaneously staying in the pocket with Mr. Linares’ drumming which, quite frankly, is both stellar and solid all the way through.  Is that a piccolo snare I hear?  Tight.  Very tight.

So…my final ruling on Ledaswan?  I like ‘em.  Not a little, but a lot.  Go to iTunes.  Get NUMB3R5. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

The KutThere is some exciting news coming out of the UK as we have just recently learned that Criminal Records recording artists The Kut are in discussions with the folks from the Rock Band video game to be included in a future release.  How cool is that?!?!?!?  If it all works out, and we certainly hope it does, Maha, Elvira and Jade could very well find themselves immortalized in video game lore along side other notable artists such as The Donnas, Rilo Kiley, Metric, The Sounds and No Doubt.  Negotiations are on going and a resolution is expected sometime this summer so stay tuned for updates.
