Broken Promise
From My Reach

For me, when I think of quintessential Brit Alt-Rock over the last few years bands like Kaiser Chiefs, The Enemy, and Hard-Fi come immediately to my mind as some of my favourites. I have a new band to add to that list. Attention Thieves, from Reading, England, launch their brand new single “Broken Promise” today. And this track delivers everything I love about British alternative rock. It’s post punk, post hardcore, with melodies your gonna find yourself singing along to at the top of your lungs in the privacy of your own car.

Also check out their 2009 four track EP Fear To Lose. The third track off the EP, “From My Reach”, should give you reason enough to get the rest of the album for yourself.

2009′s The Story by Miss Geo & The Metrics is DIY done right.  Eight (8) long months of recording in basements and, apparently, warehouses has produced an indie-pop album that holds its own against any of the overly compressed/pathologically polished drones force fed to the masses by corporate radio…that’s a good thing, in case you were wondering :-) .  The indie-pop hooks in songs like “Snake Soiree” (my personal fav) are catchy but not campy as Abby Gutierrez’s (aka Miss Geo) vocals create an element of warmth that surrounds imaginative lyrics sprung from a fertile mind.  The opening guitar riff in “Hooked” waxes a bit Depeche Mode-ish but from there the track takes on a life very much it’s own.  All in all, debut or not, Miss Geo and her merry maidens have put forth a strong showing with this disc and the word on their street is that they are back in the studio recording a follow up.  We’re not sure exactly when it’s scheduled to drop but we expect/hope it will before 2010 is in the history books.

artist: The Canon Logic | genre: alternative, rock | label: unsigned

Hearing “Avenue of Criminals,” the free single download from The Canon Logic, reminds me of those perfect days in life.  You wake up, get dressed for work and remember it’s Saturday, so you head back to bed for another three hours.  Later, you head to the store for some grub and get the last glazed donut and the coffee’s fresh.  The cashier you’ve been secretly lusting after for months finally smiles and says hello and when you rummage for the $5 you left the house with, you find a washed and tightly folded $20 in your back pocket.

How great would any one of those be?  But all of them, in one day?  Yes, yes, yes, and YES.  If every day was like that, I’d have to start a blog and take pictures, because no one would believe me.

But believe me now when I say “Avenue of Criminals” is worth your time.  It has a chorus The Killers would, uh, kill for, and it breezes along with sweet interplay between guitar and piano.  I love how the guitar falls away at the 2:20 mark, leaving the piano and the drums and singer Tim Kiely’s voice.  There’s an urgency and a passion in its structure and, at less than four minutes, it leaves me wanting more.

I’ve had it on repeat for an hour and I must say, I’m feeling good about the rest of my day.

Thanks, The Canon Logic, it’s just what I needed.

Create Your Own Reality :: Give Thanks For Life :: Higher Consciousness

NYC’s  Zion Judah may call the Big Apple home today, but his roots are in reggae.  With his latest release entitled Quest, Zee delivers a modern musical vibe that  lies somewhere between the (2) Marleys…that would be Bob and son Damian.

As the urban back beat begins on “Create Your Own Realty” listeners get just a hint of  Junior Gong flava.  While “Give Thanks For Life” moves magically to the middle where a dancehall-esque (I just love making up words!) motif meets an unmistakable roots melody.  My favourite track, however, would be “Higher Consciousness”.  A bouncy bass line, pulsating keys, sparkling guitar and smooth vocals that would bring a tear to Tuff Gong’s eye…how can you improve on that? What can I say?  When it comes to reggae I’m a purist and this is a solid tune all they way around.

Listening to Zion Judah brings down your stress level and, more importantly, reminds us that there is still plenty of good in the world and that, my friends is what I call a win-win.  Much bless…

The Judas Cow :: Insert Name Here :: Supply, Demand, Entertain

There’s a scene in the John Hughes classic “Some Kind of Wonderful,” where wannabe-artist Eric Stoltz (Keith) purposely puts himself in detention in a misguided attempt to bag Lea Thompson (Amanda). Rather than canoodling with her, Stoltz finds he’s been thrown in with the unruliest element in school.  “Is this…detention?”  He asks upon arrival.  “Actually, it’s your mother’s house…and we’re all having a party,” replies head goon, Elias Koteas (Duncan).  Not the best of starts, but the boys soon bond over art, as it turns out Duncan has some sketching mojo.  They become friends and eventually Duncan rides in and saves the day.  Order is restored; Keith ends up with the much hotter drummer girl, the music swells and…scene.

GoldRat are Duncan.  The UK band might lead with fast, pulsing guitars and barbed lyrics, but they’re not only about rage, chaos and disenchantment.  Hearing the trio of offerings on their myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/goldrat, each has a great melody and a relentless, yet relaxed vibe that took me by surprise.  “Insert Name Here” pounds along until about the two minute mark, where there’s a momentary time change before retreating back to the original melody.  My favorite is “The Judas Cow,” with its mantra of “you say it’s nothing personal, but it’s always personal” that gives way to the chorus.  “Supply, Demand, Entertain” starts with a clip of Jack Nicholson as The Joker in Batman and goes into a guitar and drum interplay and a demand of “I want entertainment.”

Give a listen to GoldRat and remember, like our hero Keith discovered, there’s more to life than what’s on the surface.

listen now: Eyes of Vin Diesel :: Super Cleaner

It’s unclear when Montreal’s Tom Hamlyn lost his mind.  One could hazard a guess that it happened while he was back in his native England studying art in Birmingham but no one really knows and I doubt we’ll ever find out for sure.  However, I, for one, am just glad he did for had he not we may never have had the chance to experience his brainchild, better known as Toykult.  This latest release, 2010′s Narcisstika, delivers pulsating electronica coupled with stellar alt-rock underpinnings and a healthy dose of of bottomless bass thrown in for good measure and, in all the right places, I might add.  Notable tracks include “Eyes of Vin Diesel”, “Super Cleaner” and “Automatic Addict” (video above) but all are deserving of a listen.

**This just in…for a limited time you can download NARCISSTIKA and Toykult’s previous release, SOW LOCO, for free (160kbps) just for subscribing to the mailing list.  Here’s the link…http://www.toykult.com/music/music.html!**
