artist: Out Like Pluto | album: Take Cover | genre: pop-punk, alt-rock | label: The James Polk Shuffle Music

Out Like PlutoThe very first line from the bio on their own web sites goes, “Out Like Pluto is not here to revolutionize music, but they do want to make you dance.” And to that I say, “Thank you!” We all know fun music when we hear it. We want to sing along to our music. We want to tap our feet. We DO NOT want to have to think about it to appreciate it. With a couple years of writing music reviews under my belt, I’ve decided that whenever somebody describes their music as “experimental” what they mean to say is, “Here is some crap for you to waste five minutes of your life listening to.” No thank you! Out Like Pluto is NOT experimental. As they self-describe themselves, they deliver on the tried-and-true. It’s foot-tapping, catchy, but super strong alt-rock. From watching some clips on YouTube of them performing live, you can tell they are just having fun, and it’s contagious. And there is nothing wrong with music just being fun. In fact, it’s what makes me like these guys so much.

The latest album Take Cover came out last January from this Seattle five-piece. First formed by Andy (drums) and Kari (vox), the Out Like Pluto lineup is flushed out with Mike and Ben (guitar) and Jeremy (bass). The first single off the album, “Bridge”, is featured in the video above. My other favorites include “Placebo (Turn Me On)” and “Starring John Stamos”. “Papercut” also stands out as it showcases a softer side of Kari’s voice accompanied by strings, and in the process shows just how strong her singing really is. Every track on the album will make you feel good though. So, yeah, it’s nothing earth-shattering, and it’s very nostalgic of alt-rock from the 90′s…. but we all love the alt-rock from the 90′s, and besides, feeling good is exactly what I want in 2012.

Not Every One Of Us
I Know You Girl

I first heard of Gumshen while working with ”another network,” as they say, and was so impressed that I felt compelled to include select tracks from their previous album, Super Buffet, as part of our global broadcast here at Froglix when we launched nearly (2) years ago.  Fast forward to today and the always entertaining indie rockers with the energetic sound from Seattle are back in the mix with a new studio release that, quite possibly, could be best work yet.  Naturally, this what one hopes for as an artist and musician…to get better, to progress, to improve and all the while exploring new areas of sound and it is quite clear that Ron Hippe, Jan Ciganik, Dennis McCoy and Rich Hinklin are doing just that.  This latest EP not only demonstrates their growth as individual musicians but as a band as well.  After all, the sum is only as good as its individual parts and with Gumshen the sum is good…that should tell you everything you need to know.

artist: High Ceiling | genre: reggae | label: unsigned

We first introduced the Froglix Faithful to this super cool reggae (aka High Ceiling) band from the woodlands of Washington state just about a year ago when they were touring in support of their latest album entitled Illusions.  Well, they are still gigging so we certainly hope our friends on the left coast have been able able to check these cats out live…but if not, here’s a vid for you!

Enjoy!

High Ceiling Live

Illusions
High and Lifted
The Golden Rule

I can see it now, the mighty Sasquatch, just minding his own business, is traipsing around the forests of the Pacific Northwest and stumbles upon a group of unsuspecting campers grooving to the sound stylings of Shelton, WA’s High Ceiling.  At first, he’d be pissed (damn Paparazzi chasing him around again) but then, after catching an earful of HC, he’d settle right down and commence to grooving right along side his evolved brethren and sistas!

With Illusion, their 2nd studio offering, Trail Black, brother Joel, Frank Fox, Gabe Olson and Bob Wake embark on a musical journey that is sure to captivate the hearts of roots enthusiasts as well as the jam band devotees.  Theirs is a true fusion that draws inspiration from reggae, rock, and funk, with just a hint of trance thrown in for good measure.  Wanna get away?  Pop this disc in and enjoy the ride!
