Ever since our inception, Froglix has been mightily impressed by the quality of independent music emanating from the land Down Under and the city of Brisbane, in particular, has the very real potential of becoming the next big thing in music.  What?  Brisbane? Drago, surely you jest.  Nay my friends, nay.  Don’t believe me?  Then check out the latest digital sampler from Sounds Like Brisbane.  This incredible collaboration compiles tracks from (18) different artists and their respective labels to create one mega Australian indie collective.  Genres include everything from jazz, to hip hop (that’s right Australian hip hop), country, alt-rock and…well…you get the picture. It’s a smattering of just about everything and here is the best part. You can download all (18) songs at once or listen to them one by one and download your favs…all for free!  Just go to www.soundslikebrisbane.com and have at it!

There are a number of stand out performances but some of my personal favs include “Blue Blood” (DZ Deathrays), “Her Song” (The Medics), “These are a Few of My Favourite Flings” (The Good Ship), “Washed Up” (I Heart Hiroshima) and “Taxes” (Undead Apes).

Aside from the music, what I find most intriguing about the SLB project is that it’s genesis sprung from the labels themselves. Stephen Green from SGC New Media Marketing explains. “There were a few meetings and some of the labels were already helping each other out, so they thought they’d get together and make it official and start the SLB website. They figured that there’s so much good stuff going on that it made sense to pool their fans and let everyone sample what everyone else is doing.” It’s a brilliant idea but will it work?  Oh, I’d say so.  If memory serves me, I believe Dischord Records in DC made quite splash by unifying the DC punk scene, paving the way for a number influential bands back in the 80′s.  Then in the the 90s, it was bands like Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Soundgarden and the like working together and supporting each other that set the stage not only for the “Seattle Sound” but entire grunge genre.  Given that track record, I’d say that the labels tying into the SLB know exactly what they are doing and we at Froglix applaud them for pushing the indie envelope and doing their part to get more great music out of the shadows and onto the world’s stage.

As 2010 comes to a close, naturally, we tend to reflect on the year that was…and what a year it’s been here at Froglix!  We’ve made a number of technical upgrades and changes, incorporated more video content into our postings and last (but certainly not least) we’ve welcomed our good friend Thurdeen to the Froglix fold as our newest writer.  Further, and most importantly, we have been introduced to a bevy of talented musicians from around the world all striving for the same goal…to have their voices and their music heard by a global audience.  We consider it an honour to have been able to play even a small part in making that happen.  It has truly been a tremendous year in indie music and we are looking forward to what we are sure will be an incredible 2011 with great anticipation.  However, before we jump ahead, we would be remiss if we were not to take one more look back at the year that was and offer up our own “best of.”

Ladies and gentlemen, it is a distinct honour, nay a privilege, to present the First Annual Froglix Music Awards!  Winners of this year’s “Froggy” awards have been selected by the listeners and readers with input for DMitch, Thurdeen and myself, of course.  With a year filled with so much excellent music it was indeed difficult to narrow it down…but with no more gilding the lily or anymore adieu I give the winners!

Late Empire :: Unus

Your friends here at Froglix are pretty impressed with the alternative music coming out of the “the Boot” and that’s saying something because we don’t impress easy.  Italy’s Thisorder delivers a healthy dose of melodic mayhem that packs a respectable punch without going overboard.   This, my friends, is a good thing because while I dig music with an edge I’d prefer that it not be accompanied by the guttural utterance of strung out anger mavens…please and thank you.  Fortunately, that is NOT what you get with Thisorder.  Emanuel Rontino’s vox is a versatile one in that it can pull off both the “alt” (as demonstrated on the track ‘Unus’) as well the “rock” (check out ‘Late Empire’).  The guitar work of Marco Albanelli adds just the right spice to the mix as he, bassist Domenico Muscariello and drummer Tommasao Manna drape their compositions with a soundscape that pairs the aggressive nature of grunge with the melodious agility of alt-rock.   Inner Island, released earlier this year, was mastered in New York City at Sterling sound by Justin Shurtz who has worked with a number of very successful artists such as the now defunct Fall Out Boy as well as My Chemical Romance, Seether and Slipknot.  We digs it.

Freeze :: Turn the Light :: 26th of May

Before I had even heard note one from The Wake, I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going to be pleasantly surprised and, indeed, I was.  The line from their bio says it all.  “We wrote, we play, we sing”…and they, in fact, do all three and rather well at that.  The sound of The Wake continues to evolve as does their list of influences which, at the time of this writing, includes everyone from the Beatles to Tool.  What I find remarkable is that Saverio Guerrini (lead vocalist), Francesco Salvadori (lead guitar) Pietro Rotelli (rhythm guitar), Andrea Valentini (bass) and Paolo Vallini (drums) are able to pool all of these varying influences and create a unified sound that is melodic, aggressive and true.   “Freeze” and “Turn the Light” remind me a lot of edgier, early Bush, (with and Italian flair, of course), while “26th of May” is leans a bit more to the mellow side of the Rossdale repetoire.  All in all, they display great dynamics with solid phrasing and performance.  The Wake = buono.
