This week we broke out with The Chain Gang of 1974…and I just now got Thurdeen’s reference in the title. How sad is that?  I am sharp! Regardless, “Matter of Time” is a great tune and definitely worth a listen from their MySpace page.  DMitch pimped some of OT-musicboy’s new tuneage…and…uh…I have to agree, that cat plays some good music but that name…arg.  We then followed up with a video from San Antonio indie rockers Ledaswan which is just a prelude to a full review due out next week.  Finally, (3) tracks from HUB brought yours truly to the stunning realization that there are some good singer-songwriters out there!

Next week…more from Ledaswan, King Cotton and much more!  Until then…peace!

At first listen it was almost as if these cats were channeling The Jam…but ’tis not so.  I checked…no channeling.  Good song though.  “Chandeliers” from Summer Fiction‘s self-titled, debut release is a folky/indie-pop ditty that waxes a bit retro…but in a good way for sure.  We totally dig the old school vibe laid down by the  b/w presentation as it most certainly adds to the mystique of the video.

We did take a listen to some of their other songs via their Myspace page (click here) and there definitely some other notable tracks.  Be sure to look for a full-fledged review in the not so distant future but, in the meantime, enjoy the vid and be sure check ‘em out online at MySpace and iTunes.

artist: Rocketclover | genre: indie, folk | label: Criminal Records

Our friends at Criminal Records have turned us on to some great music since Froglix launched almost a year and half ago!  The Kut, The Exits…cutting edge alternative rock bands with plenty of indie attitude…and then there’s Rocketclover.  These blokes are hilarious, wonderfully talented musicians who have taken what is arguably one of the best (if not the best) punk song every written and transformed it into an indie/folk gem!  Look, covering the Sex Pistols is nothing new but…a folk version of Anarchy in the UK’!?  Are you kidding me?!?  This one has got to be at the top of the list for ingenuity.

A recent press release from CR stated out that “The motive behind the release aims to rectify the 1977 injustice against The Sex Pistols whose popular single ‘God Save The Queen’ was prevented from reaching No. 1 because of an ‘unwelcome’ coincidence with the Queen’s silver jubilee.”

Their motivation ’tis noble indeed…and the song/video are both a fitting tribute to a phenomenal band.

Sweet Escape :: Rain or Shine

Folk/rock from New Jersey?  Really?  The one summer I spent on the Jersey Shore (Seaside Heights…to be exact) all I ever heard was club music and hip-hop.  Musically, it was the worst three months of my life!  Not that there is anything wrong those genres, I actually dig them…just not 24/7.  Needless to say, being able to listen to band as digable as Sunflower and the Seeds would have been a welcome change to Lime and The Cover Girls…although my roomates at the time (Pauly “The Gooch” Gaccione, Joey Tut and John “Mulch” Vilotta) would staunchly disagree!

However, having listened to their 4-song EP entitled This One’s on Us about a gazillion times I must admit I’m quite smitten with their sound.  The music of  Kyra “Sunflower” Schenck (vox/acoustic guitar), Bob Schenck (keys), Alex Denney (bass), Teddy Owen (electric guitar), Jovan Mann (electric guitar) and Joe Huster (drums) exhibits a certain degree of honest purity that is not always easy to find in today’s commercial/mainstream music scene.  I find myself being drawn as much to the melancholy moodiness of “Jellyfish Sunrise” as I am the dark guitar laden jams of “Apocalypse” as both tracks showcase the band’s range and versatility.  This versatility of which I speak is further exemplified in “Rain or Shine” which sounds a bit like Edie Brickell fronting the Alman Brothers band while being backed by gospel singers from U2′s “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”  Way cool.  The coolest, however, in my humble (but accurate) opinion is “Sweet Escape. It’s bouncy. It’s folksy. It’s soulful…and it rocks. The keys (which sound a lot like a Hammond Organ) really make this song for me, not because they are way out in front but because they provide a colourful backdrop for some wicked guitar work and a vocal element that is truly inspired.

Bleeding Heart :: Better Man

To be quite frank, I really didn’t think I would dig this one all that much as I am just not very fond of alt-country/indie/add your own adjective here.  As I pressed play on the mp3 player I cringed, bracing myself for the impending train wreck of sound that was sure to follow.   But it didn’t.  To my pleasant and wonderful surprise, Delicious Creation, the 2009 debut album by Danish guitarist/singer-songwriter Casper Jones (now living in Boston, MA) showcases Jones’ edgy guitars as his soulful lyrics laced with alt-rock angst take center stage for an Incubus meets Cracker kind of experience.

As the first power chords of Bleeding Heart’ rang out I found myself intrigued and looking forward to what was coming next…even though I had no idea what that could be.  Then, much to my chagrin, the next (2) tracks I listened to (‘Nothing Else’ and ‘One Night in Hell’) left me scratching my head as I now found myself looking for the folk/alt-country influence.  Where was it?  Next, I queued up ‘Better Man’.  The song opened with a bright country/blues riff…and there it was.  There’s the rub.  However, that which I had feared I actually found to be quite a refreshing compliment.  In fact, I would be being less than truthful were I not to admit that I was somewhat enamored with the bouncy tempo of Jones’ crisp/melodic guitar work.

Casper Jones’ Delicious Creation is a serendipity of sound that truly lives up to it’s namesake.
