Summer Fiction - Christmas Eve For TwoIs it the Christmas season already?? I know the holiday decorations now go up the day after Halloween; but, I personally refuse to acknowledge them until after the fourth Thursday of November. Well now that date has passed and Christmas actually is just a month away, so even though I’m a bit of a Grinch, let us all enjoy a bit of Christmas tunage together.

Summer Fiction delivers their gift to the season in their usual wrappings of baroque pop with “Christmas Eve For Two”. This has all the hallmarks of a classic Christmas pop song…subtle sleigh bells in the chorus, mentions of snowflakes, Santa, mistletoe and “kissin’ by the glow of Christmas lights”. What else could you want?

“It’s Americana-ish!” is how Andy Hawk describes his latest studio effort with the Train Wreck Endings and if you’ve heard any of their previous work you’d find it hard to put them into one specific category or genre too.  This, my friends, is a talented group of musicians that effortlessly blends folk, blues and rock into their own special brand of truly American music.

In addition to a new set of original tunes, the soon to be released disc entitled Another Storyline also includes a rocking cover of New Order‘s “Temptation” that features a mandolin as a stand in for the synths….very nice. “Sunshine Street,” my favourite original track, starts with a punchy little bass line paired with the perfect drum cadence…add in some excellent vocal harmonies and, of course, more mandolin and you’ve got a cool little ditty.

Froglix greatly appreciates Andy and company for allowing us a “sneak peek” at Another Storyline and would be remiss if we didn’t do a little pimpin’on their behalf by promoting their upcoming CD release party.

  • When: Friday, November 11 @ 8pm
  • Where: Franklin Park Arts Center in Purcellville, VA.

Be sure to check out www.andyhawk.com for details, tickets, etc.

I can’t prove it but I’m pretty sure it’s the same dude playing all three instruments…check that…it’s just the same hair.  Regardless, The Grapes of Wrath were one of Canada’s most successful indie/folk/rock bands from the time they formed in British Columbia in 1983 until they broke up in 1992.  This particular track,  “O Lucky Man” was a big hit on the college scene back in the day.  It’s a bit overcast here in the Washington, DC so I figured some sparkly guitar and harmonious lyrics would liven up the place a bit.  Whether it’s sunny, cloudy or coming down in buckets wherever you are in the world…happy Monday, my friends.  Enjoy!

Philadephia’s Munny & the Cameraman released their self-titled debut disc this past fall.  October 8th to be exact…and we missed it.  How in the heck did we miss it?  Time to fire the Research Department.  Wait. That would be me.  Ok…bad idea.  Let’s focus on the positives here shall we?  We shall.

Regardless of how long it’s taken for us to hear this disc, it’s been well worth the wait.  As I hit play on the mp3 player, the opening track entitled “Tattoos” begins and immediately captures my attention with quasi-military style drum cadence. Next the guitars add a sparkling layer of texture that meshes will with the warm bass and vocals which resonate with unmistakeable clarity and melody. “Start a revolution maybe, you’ll feel better inside.” I thought indie-folk was all about the love?  “Revolutions” showcases earthy vocals set against a shuffle like tempo on the drums and echoed by guitar and bass.  I really like the flow of this song. The same can be said about “We All Wanted Something,” as M & the C ditch the rhythm section and rely solely on the interplay of voice and guitar.  Nice.

This is one of those albums that one could imagine hearing while sitting in solitary at a local coffee shop.  You’d notice it right away, then you’d stop to listen just for a second and  before you know it you are lost in thought as your mind switches over to autopilot.  Take my advice, don’t fight it…just enjoy the ride.

It’s not flashy…but I think that’s what I like about it.  In this video for “Throw Your Arms Around Me” Summer Fiction takes their folkish 60′s vibe and set it to an old Candice Bergen movie…what’s not to like?   Watch it here…buy it on !

This week we broke out with The Chain Gang of 1974…and I just now got Thurdeen’s reference in the title. How sad is that?  I am sharp! Regardless, “Matter of Time” is a great tune and definitely worth a listen from their MySpace page.  DMitch pimped some of OT-musicboy’s new tuneage…and…uh…I have to agree, that cat plays some good music but that name…arg.  We then followed up with a video from San Antonio indie rockers Ledaswan which is just a prelude to a full review due out next week.  Finally, (3) tracks from HUB brought yours truly to the stunning realization that there are some good singer-songwriters out there!

Next week…more from Ledaswan, King Cotton and much more!  Until then…peace!
