DC’s The Treading Lemmings are back in the studio working on tracks for their upcoming full length disc due out this summer. According to Lemmings’ front man Quinn, the album Cliff Notes (working title), once released, will not disappoint and, more to the point, will make quite a favourable impression on many a discerning ear. Having heard the Lemmings live, in the studio and on many recordings I would tend to agree with him. Interestingly enough, the Lemmings have also started to catalogue their studio experience via a blog on their MySpace page so be sure to check it out at www.myspace.com/treadinglemmings.

Not to be out done, our friends from Canada, the grunge master generals themselves, 22nd Century are working on a follow up to their first EP Apartment 509 as well. In addition to the new the full-length release, they are also planning a spring tour that should include a CD release show in the Big Apple sometime in mid-may.

We round out 2009 with the Best of OuterSound. It is a compilation of some (but not all) of the best indie music that has been delivered to the Froglix Faithful via our monthly OuterSound podcast and/or our global broadcast on Froglix Radio. This first year-end edition could easily have been 2-3 times as long as it was very difficult to pick the songs for this episode. We have, however settled on a final “Best of” list and it is, in order of appearance:

Your friends at Froglix are pleased to announce that the inaugural episode of the OuterSound Indie Music podcast is available for download! Every month we will be compiling a “highlight reel”, of sorts, showcasing (10) tracks of new music from global artists currently in rotation on Froglix Radio. So why a podcast you may ask? Well, our main goal was a simple one. To provide listeners with on-demand/on the go access to the best indie music on the planet.

Historically, Lemmings have been portrayed in literature and legend as cute, cuddly rodents who like to gather in large groups at the edge of a mighty precipice, only to hurl themselves to their watery deaths. Not an overly flattering picture, I’m afraid, but an excellent metaphor for bands duped by the “majors” into patterning themselves after the “latest and greatest” group being touted by corporate radio (aka the devil). Thankfully, such is not the case with The Treading Lemmings an alt-rock/brit-pop band that hails from Washington, DC. These Lemmings are making their own way in the music world and are doing so with a sound that is creative, energetic and, best of all, pleasantly dissimilar to the mindless droves trying to become the next big emo-punk band.

Drummer Joe Szad and bassist Mr. Mark anchor the band’s compositions with a rhythm section that is strong like bull while Andrew Stainer and Andy Hunt add a world of light and colour to the mix with their exceptional guitar work. Lead singer Chris Quinn’s lyrics are insightful and his voice is as strong and commanding as his stage presence. Together they create a unified sound that resonates with remarkable originality. Froglix is thrilled to get a sneak peak at (3) tracks off their upcoming full-length release Cliff Notes and even more amped to be able to include them as part of our global broadcast. Not only is it ok to follow these Lemmings, it’s highly recommended!
